Football, Track and Field • 1952-53
George Riley did a little bit of everything in his time with the Lions, playing both offense and defense in his two seasons on the Lion football team. He was a member of two Lone Star Conference Championship teams and was an All-LSC selection in both of his seasons, including First Team honors as a senior. As a halfback, Riley rushed 145 times for 1,126 yards and 13 touchdowns and also had 326 receiving yards and five touchdowns. He also had a kickoff return for a touchdown and recorded two interceptions on the defensive end. He also kicked 12 PATs during the 1953 season. In total, he had 1,822 all-purpose yards and scored 126 points in his Lion career.
Riley was also a member of the Lion track team, earning First Team All-LSC honors in both of his seasons, helping the team to two LSC Championships.
Following his ETSU playing career, Riley went on to coach in public school. One of his former players described him as "an All-American halfback, coach, teacher and gentleman."
