COMMERCE, Texas – The floor of The Field House is getting a serious facelift beginning this week, the first significant change to the playing surface in over six decades.
Â
Workers began pulling up The Field House playing surface on Monday morning, beginning a six-week project that is scheduled to be completed before A&M-Commerce's spring graduation, set for May 10.
Â
"This floor has seen a lot in its time, but after 64 years it is time for something new," Director of Athletics
Ryan Ivey said. "We want to be able to provide the best possible faciltiies for our student-athletes, and this is an upgrade that will make a significant change to one of our flagship facilities."
Â
The current floor is the original floor installed when The Field House was built in 1950, with only periodic resurfacing occurring since then. Workers will only be removing the area of the floor used for competition, not the remainder of the hardwood throughout the building. No other structural changes are planned.
Â
A new, unique floor design will also accompany the new hardwood, while pieces of the original floor will be up for sale to interested parties. Details on purchasing pieces of the floor will be upcoming soon.
