Lions’ Williams Named First Team Daktronics All-American

Williams becomes the fourth First Team All-American in program history

Edinboro, Pa. – A&M-Commerce's Darrell Williams has been named Daktronics/Division II Conference Commissioners Association All-American after leading the Lions to their first 20-win season and first appearance in the NCAA in 10 years.

The senior forward was selected the South Central Region Player of the Year in addition to being chosen the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. Williams led A&M-Commerce to its first 20-win season since 2004-05 as the Lions finished with a 24-8 record, losing to Angelo State in the first round of the South Central Regional.

He averaged 18.5 points and 12.4 rebounds per game, the latter figure third in Division II. He shot 56.2 percent from the floor (218-of-388) and 71.6 percent from the line (151-of-211). Williams recorded 23 double-doubles, which is second in Division II, and had 15-or-more rebounds in a game ten times and 20-or-more rebounds three times.

Williams' selection becomes the 28th time a Lion has been named an All-American, and the 23rd different A&M-Commerce player to be recognized as an All-American.  He is the first Lion All-American since Scooby Johnson was named Third Team Daktronics All-American in 2007-08.  The Lions have not had a First Team All-American selection since Lee Johnson was named NAIA First Team All-American in 1978-79.  All told the Lions have only had three prior First Team All-Americans – Johnson, Jeff Fitch in 1966-67 and Jim Miller in 1954-55.
