Decathletes and Heptathletes Find Rousing Success in Day One of LSC Championship

Lundy, Nungess 2nd and 3rd; Lee 4th at Midway Point

SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – A&M-Commerce got out to a roaring start in the first day of competition, with James Lundy, Hendrik Nungess and Ginnie Lee all sitting among the top-four at the midway-point of the multi-events.

James Lundy leads the way for the Lions with 3787 points through five events in the decathlon, sitting a scant twelve points back of first place. The senior smashed his personal best in the high jump and won the event handily with a height of 2.13m, dramatically improving his provisional qualifying mark from 21st to eighth in Division II. Not only that, Lundy achieved personal bests in the 100m (11.05), long jump (6.64m) and 400m (50.99).

Not to be outdone, sophomore Hendrik Nungess had an excellent day in his own right, finishing right on Lundy's heels with a score of 3732. Like his aforementioned teammate, Nungess broke four personal bests on the day, which included the 100m (11.48), long jump (6.82m), shot put (15.27m) and 400m (53.34). Rounding things out in the decathlon, freshman Louis Simon will start off in sixth place with a score of 3292 thanks to three personal bests of his own.
With four of seven events complete in the heptathlon, Ginnie Lee finished the day in fourth place with a score of 2881 points. Lee got out the gate strong, breaking her personal best mark of 15.41 in the 100m hurdles by over two tenths of a second (15.19). From there, Lee would grab yet another personal best, this time with a speed of 25.56 in the 200m dash.

Behind her, Jessica Clay stands in the middle of the pack in seventh place thanks to a score of 2661. Like Lee, Clay beat her personal best in the 200m dash (26.15), and came very close to doing the same in the 100m hurdles. Felicia Boyefio rounded things out with a score of 2380, which has her in 11th place.

The second day of action begins tomorrow morning, May 8th. The decathlon will be the first event to resume, starting at 10:30 a.m. with the 110m hurdles. Shortly thereafter at 11:00 a.m., the heptathlon will continue with the long jump. General competition will at last begin at 3:00 p.m., with the women's hammer throw, women's pole vault, and women's triple jump all kicking off.
