Lions Break Five School Records on Day Two of LSC Championships

Nungess, Moghaddam Each Break LSC Championship Records

SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – A&M-Commerce track and field achieved unbridled success on the second day of action at the LSC Championships, as five school-records came toppling down in the Lions' wake.

Hendrik Nungess started the day by picking up where he left off in the decathlon. The sophomore entered day two in third place, but by the time day two was in the books, Nugess pulled off a nearly 600-point victory by scoring an automatic qualifying 7542 points. The native of Germany hit a whopping seven personal bests in the decathlon, not only breaking Matt Rich's A&M-Commerce school record, not only breaking the eight-year-old Lone Star Conference Championship record set in 2007 by Chris Pounds of Abilene Christian, but he also achieved the second-best mark in the country. James Lundy had a phenomenal day in his own right with a third place score of 6674, most-notably hitting the eighth highest mark in the country with a personal best height of 2.13m in the high jump.

The trio of Masoud Moghaddam, Chase Graham and Kellen Dion finished first, second and third in the hammer throw. With a heave of 65.63m, Moghaddam broke the stadium record, the LSC Championship record, and his own A&M-Commerce school record, and moves up one spot from sixth to fifth in Division II. Chase Graham made a mark as well, hitting a personal best of 55.55m, a provisional qualifying mark.
DeVontae Steele and Gage Bowles went bananas in the triple jump with a one-two finish, as both men surpassed the A&M-Commerce school record. Bowles jumped for 15.29m, while Steele hit a huge distance of 15.56m. The two are now ranked first and fourth in Division II.

For the third time this year, Ashley Bassett reset her own A&M-Commerce school record, this time in emphatic fashion. Setting it first at the Texas Relays (1:01.95) and again in the East Texas Invite (1:00.93), Bassett hit the precipice of her career to date with an eye-popping time of 59.87, which vaults her to 11th in the country.

Dexter Lee was the final Lion to evulse a record, doing so in the preliminary round of the 400m dash. Lee broke teammate John David Rollins' mark of 47.40 by a mere two one-hundredths of a second (47.38), which moved him up from 18th to 15th overall in Division II, a key improvement at this late juncture in the season. Lee also managed to qualify for the finals of the 200m dash thanks to a provisional qualifying time of 21.55. Lee was far from alone in delivering quality performances in the 200m, as A&M-Commerce managed to inject four Lions (Lee, Rollins, Ravi Dubose and Soren Gnoss) into the finals.

Several other Lions claimed medals on the day. Matt Rich grabbed silver in the pole vault by tying for second with a launch of 4.79m. Rich wasn't done there, as the senior also jumped from 45th to 9th in Division II in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.13. Mark Gonzalez took home bronze in the steeplechase with a time of 9:41.82, while Terra Truitt did the same by finishing third in the 10,000m run with a time of 38:49.71.

Dionte Taylor achieved a provisional qualifying mark in the 100m dash prelims with a time of 10.47, putting him at No. 18 in Division II. Kamryn McKee meanwhile pulled off a provisional qualifier of her own in the 400m with a time of 55.84. Rounding things out for the Lions, Luis Romero won the preliminary race for the 800m run outright, making him the favorite heading into tomorrow.

After two days of action, the men hold possession of first place with a team score of 71, nine points ahead of second place Angelo State, and 24 points ahead of the lurking West Texas A&M Buffaloes. The women meanwhile are in fifth place with a team score of 21 points, just eight points back of fourth place A&M-Kingsville.

Action resumes on Saturday, May 9, the final day of the LSC Championship. The first event on the schedule is the women's javelin throw, which is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
