Commerce, Texas – A&M-Commerce held its annual Student-Athlete Awards Night in the RSC with women's soccer player Vickie Back earning the top female award, the Lib Huggins Award, and Ricky Romero earning the top male honors, the Dr. Jesse Hawthorne Award, while football and softball was recognized as Programs of the Year.
Back was a First Team All-American and arguably the best player in the Lone Star conference after leading the league in game-winning goals, goals and points. She also earned All-LSC First Team and First Team All-Region honors.
Romero became the second A&M-Commerce student-athlete to win an NCAA National Championship and the first on the track when he claimed the national tile 800m indoor title.
The Lion football team roared through the Lone Star Conference with a perfect 6-0 record and claimed the program's first bid into the NCAA Playoffs since the 1991 season, while the Lion softball team became the first NCAA Division II softball program to make the NCAA Championship in the program's second season while excelling in the classroom after earning the school's top team GPA award.
