Synopsis: Dallas Baptist opened up the 2012-13 season with a 79-72 victory over Lone Star Conference rival Abilene Christian Saturday, led by Nick Fox's 32 points and 13 rebounds. Fox hit 7-of-13 shots from the floor and 15-of-15 from the line with Wesley Gipson adding 11 points and Charles Allen finishing with 10.
Series Information
Tuesday marks the 18th meeting all-time between A&M-Commerce and Dallas Baptist with the Lions holding a 10-7 edge in the all-time series. The two teams met last year in Dallas with the Patriots pulling away late to hand the Lions a 71-61 defeat. It marked the first meeting since the 1985-86 season – the last time Dallas Baptist has visited the Field House. The two have split the last 10 meetings with each team notching five victories.
Lions Open 2012-13 Season With Split at St. Edward's Shootout
A&M-Commerce opened up the 2012-13 season with a pair of games at the St. Edward's Shootout in Austin, earning a split on the weekend. The Lions fell behind early against host St. Edward's in the season finale and their second half rally fell short, falling to the Hilltoppers 75-70. The following night, it was a role reversal as A&M-Commerce raced out to the early lead on UT-Permian Basin, then held on in the second half for an 80-65 victory.
Davis Opens Senior Campaign With a Bang
Senior forward Andrew Davis got his senior season off to a strong start over the weekend at the St. Edward's Shootout. The 2011-12 LSC Academic Player of the Year, Davis recorded 13 points and 11 rebounds in the season opener against St. Edward's Friday evening, followed by a 10-point, 11-rebound performance the following night against UT-Permian Basin. For his efforts, Davis was named to the St. Edward's Shootout All-Tournament Team.
Carson, Wooten Notch Strong Start in Season Debuts
A number of Lions came through with impressive performances over the weekend as A&M-Commerce opened up the 2012-13 season with a 1-1 record. Stefon Carson notched double-digit point totals in both games, finishing with 11 against St. Edward's and 13 against UT-Permian Basin with five assists. Tyrie Wooten was also impressive in his Lion debut, finishing with 11 points against the Hilltoppers and nine against the Falcons, including going 5-of-12 from three-point range and 3-of-4 from the line.
Looking Ahead
A&M-Commerce heads back on the road this weekend, traveling to Stephenville for the 2012 Tarleton State Texan Tip-Off. The Lions open up the two-day tournament facing East Central Friday at 5 p.m., followed by a rematch with UT-Permian Basin at 5 p.m. Saturday afternoon. A&M-Commerce then returns home to face Ouachita Baptist on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m.
