SAN ANTONIO, Texas – After opening up the 2011 Bruce Williams Memorial Invitational with a 25-over 313, A&M-Commerce shaves 14 strokes off that total over the second round, posting an 11-over 299 in round two and sit in ninth place. It marks the third time this season the Lions have posted a sub-300 round.
Patrick Russo has been the top A&M-Commerce performer through the opening 36 holes, shooting a 9-over 153, including a 2-over 74 in round two, and is currently tied for 23rd in the individual standings. He holds a one stroke lead over freshman teammate Derek Rucki, who is tied for 32nd with a 10-over 154 through round two.
That was the theme of the day for A&M-Commerce as all five Lions sit one stroke back of the teammate in front of them on the scorecard. Fellow freshman Marcus Sanna posted an 11-over 155 after leading the Lions with a 3-over 75 in round one. Jarret Martin is one shot behind Sanna with a 12-over 156, followed by Chris Leasor's 13-over 157, who recovered from a shaky opening round to match Russo's 2-over 74 in round two.
The Lions appear to be in good shape to notch their first top-10 finish of the season, leading 10th-place West Texas A&M (42-over 618) by six shots after Monday's opening two rounds. A&M-Commerce looks to make its move up the leaderboard, trailing eighth-place Incarnate Word's black team (34-over 610) by two shots and sits five strokes back of both Newman and St. Mary's (31-over 607), who are tied for sixth in the team standings.
The final round should provide plenty of intrigue at the top of the leaderboard as Abilene Christian leads the tournament with a 1-over 577 through the opening 36 holes, two shots ahead of second-place Northeastern State (3-over 579) and four better than Incarnate Word's red team (5-over 581). East Central (25-over 601) and Arkansas-Fort Smith (28-over 604) round out the top five.
Tuesday's final round gets underway at 8:30 a.m. at Dominion Country Club in San Antonio. The Lions will be paired with Newman and St. Mary's, the two teams they are trying to chase down, in the final round groupings. Full results will be available at LionAthletics.com when they become available.
