A&M-COMMERCE STRUGGLES ON FIRST DAY OF ST. EDWARD'S INVITATIONAL

AUSTIN, Texas – A&M-Commerce struggled over the opening two rounds of the St. Edward’s Invitational, compiling a 75-over 651 to sit 17th out of the 17-team field at the Grey Rock Golf Club. The Lions got off to a rocky start, shooting a 45-over 333 in round one, but recovered a bit in round two, shaving 15 strokes to notch a 30-over 318.

Freshman Kyle Middleton heads into the final round sitting a top the Lion scorecard, shooting an 8-over 80 in round one before notching a 5-over 77 in round two and is tied for 48th in the individual standings with a 13-over 157. He holds a four-stroke lead over sophomore Patrick Russo, who tied Middleton for the best round of the day with a 77, shaking off a 12-over 84 in round one.

Freshman Brent Reagan, competing in his first tournament as a Lion after playing as an individual last week, sits third on the A&M-Commerce scorecard with a 21-over 165, three strokes better than fellow freshman Cade Grimm’s 24-over 168. Freshman Derek Rucki rounds out the Lion competitors with a 33-over 177 through two rounds.

A&M-Commerce faces a stiff uphill battle on Tuesday’s final round if it wants to make a run up the team standings, trailing 16th-place Southwestern Oklahoma State by 16 strokes (59-over 635) and sitting 22 shots back of both Lone Star Conference rival Midwestern State and Colorado State-Pueblo (53-over 629) for 14th overall.

Nova Southeastern heads into Tuesday’s final round with a 12-over 588, one shot ahead of Barry University (13-over 589). Host St. Edward’s (23-over 599), Chico State (26-over 602) and LSC rival Abilene Christian (27-over 603) round out the team top five with Barry’s Daniel Stapff holding a commanding lead in the individual standings with an impressive 7-under 137.
