DALLAS – A&M-Commerce sophomore Patrick Russo highlighted the afternoon for the Lions at the Dallas Baptist Classic, firing a career-low 4-under 66 in round two and currently sits tied for eighth in the individual standings with a 2-under 138. A&M-Commerce enters Tuesday's final round 15th out of a challenging 18 team field following two rounds below 300, including a season-low 9-over 289 in round two.
Russo opened up the day with a 2-over 72, then responded with his 4-under 66 in round two, tying for the second lowest round of the afternoon. It shaved three strokes off his previous career-best of 69 at the season-opening Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate as he sits three shots back of tournament leader Santiago Quintero of St. Edward's (5-under 135).
Freshman Derek Rucki opened up the day for A&M-Commerce firing a 1-over 71, setting a new career-low. He followed that up with a 4-over 74 and sits tied for 52nd with a 5-over 145. He leads teammate Marcus Sanna, the reigning Lone Star Conference Golfer of the Week, by one shot after Sanna posted a 6-over 146. Freshman Brett Bradshaw (13-over 153) and sophomore John Moug (19-over 159) round out the A&M-Commerce scorecard.
The Lions head into Tuesday's final round with a chance to make a charge up the standings, trailing both host Dallas Baptist and Southeastern Oklahoma State (19-over 579) by three strokes, and sit nine shots back of both Incarnate Word and St. Mary's (13-over 573), who are tied for 11th overall.
Texas Wesleyan holds on to the top spot among the team leaders, compiling a 7-under 553 through the opening two rounds, including an 11-under 269 in round one, and leads Lubbock Christian (5-under 555) by two strokes heading into Tuesday's final round. Abilene Christian (2-under 558) is third with St. Edward's and Central Oklahoma (1-under 559) tied for fourth, one shot ahead of sixth-place Oklahoma Christian (even-par 560).
A&M-Commerce looks to make its charge over the final 18 holes, teeing off at 8:30 a.m. The Lions will be paired with host Dallas Baptist and Southeastern Oklahoma State, beginning on the back nine holes. Full results will be posted as they become available at LionAthletics.com.
