TROPHY CLUB, Texas – A&M-closed out the opening two rounds in fifth place at the 2012 Firestone Lone Star Conference Championships Monday, shooting a 17-over 593 at the Whitworth Course. A&M-Commerce enters Tuesday's final round one stroke back of fourth-place West Texas A&M (16-over 592).
Freshman Marcus Sanna, who was named an All-Lone Star Conference honorable mention selection Sunday, paced the Lions with a 3-over 147 through rounds one and two and is part of a four-player tie for 11 th overall in the individual standings after entering round two tied for fifth following a 1-over 73 in round one. Sanna holds a one-stroke lead over fellow sophomore Cade Grimm, who is tied for 15th with a 4-over 148 following a 1-over 73 in round two.
Fellow freshman Kyle Middleton struggled in round one, shooting a 7-over 79, but found his groove in round two, firing a 2-under 70 to become the third Lion to crack the top-20, sitting in a four-way tie for 19th overall. Sophomore Patrick Russo is 24th in the individual standings with a 9-over 153, six shots better than freshman Jarret Martin's 15-over 159.
A&M-Commerce opened up the 2012 Lone Star Conference Championships with a 16-over 304 in round one and found itself in fourth place in the team standings. The Lions recovered in round two, firing a 1-over 289, but low scores by the other LSC teams moved A&M-Commerce down one spot to fifth, one shot back of the Buffs for fourth.
Cameron used an even-par opening round then a 5-under 283 in round two to post a 5-under 571, leading Abilene Christian (even-par 576) by five shots and holding a nine-stroke advantage on Midwestern State (4-over 580). The Aggies' Garrett Smith has dominated the individual leaderboard, shooting a 5-under 139 and leads second-place Alex Carpenter of Abilene Christian (1-under 143) by four shots.
Tuesday's final round gets underway at 10:08 a.m. with the Lions teamed up with Incarnate Word and West Texas A&M in the first threesomes to tee off.
