Opening Tee
A&M-Commerce concluded the 2011-12 season with five top-10 team finishes, capped by a fifth-place showing at the 2012 Lone Star Conference Championships on April 16-17 at Trophy Club, Texas. The Lions finished among the top-five three times, including a runner-up finish at the California Baptist Spring Break Collegiate April 2-3.
Sanna, Russo Garner LSC Player of the Week Honors
For back-to-back weeks in April, A&M-Commerce was home to the Lone Star Conference's Golfer of the Week. Freshman Marcus Sanna earned the nod on April 4 after capturing the individual title at the California Baptist Spring Break Collegiate with an even-par 142, including a career-low 4-under 67 in round two. The following week, sophomore Patrick Russo earned the same honor after notching a runner-up finish at the Dallas Baptist Classic with a 2-under 208, which also included a career-best 4-under 66 in round two.
Sanna Emerges in Freshman Campaign For Lions
Freshman Marcus Sanna emerged as one of the top golfers on the A&M-Commerce squad in his collegiate debut, ranking second on the team with a 75.50 scoring average. Sanna, who captured the California Baptist Spring Break Collegiate title, also notched two additional top-20 finishes while shooting under par in three separate rounds on the season. He notched a career-best 4-under 67 in the final round of the Spring Break Collegiate and was among the top-two Lion finishers in seven of A&M-Commerce's 10 events. Sanna was also tabbed a Lone Star Conference honorable mention selection in addition to being named A&M-Commerce's Boley Crawford Award winner for the top male golfer.
Russo Posts Another Solid Season
Sophomore Patrick Russo continued to establish his spot as one of the top Lion golfers, leading A&M-Commerce with a 75.44 scoring average on the season with a pair of top-10 finishes. In addition to his runner-up finish at the Dallas Baptist Classic, Russo placed eighth at the Bruce Williams Memorial Invitational after posting a 3-under 69 in the final round. He recorded an additional top-20 showing on the year, finishing among the top-three A&M-Commerce golfers in eight of 10 tournaments on the season. Russo shot par or better in five different rounds, including a pair of rounds in the 60's.
Leasor Dominates At Lion Fall Invitational At The Tribute
Sophomore Chris Leasor notched the second individual tournament title of his A&M-Commerce career in convincing fashion, capturing the Lion Fall Invitational with a 10-under 134, including an impressive 7-under 65 over the final 18 holes. Leasor's 3-under 69 in round one was a then-personal best, which was shattered less than 24 hours later as he won the individual title by three strokes. Leasor competed in four events in the fall season, posting a 75.80 scoring average.
Newcomers Make Their Mark For Lions
With a roster comprised entirely of sophomores and freshmen, a handful of newcomers played a key role for the 2011-12 Lion squad. Freshmen Cade Grimm and Kyle Middleton each competed in six events for A&M-Commerce and posted scoring averages of 77.50 and 77.79, respectively, with three top-20 finishes between the pair. Jarret Martin was a constant in the A&M-Commerce lineup, appearing in eight tournaments while compiling a 79.37 scoring average, with fellow freshman Derek Rucki competing in six events with a 79.56 average and a top-20 finish to his credit.
