DUNCAN, Okla. – Led by three golfers sitting among the individual top-10, A&M-Commerce sits in first place after the opening round of the 2012 Territory Classic at the Territory Golf Club. The Lions posted a 4-over 292 in round one and enter Tuesday's final round with a five-stroke lead over a pair of Lone Star Conference opponents.
Juniors Patrick Russo and C.J. Clem paced A&M-Commerce through the opening 18 holes. Clem notched a 1-under 36 over the front nine while Russo responded with a 2-under 34 over the back nine, finishing the day with a 1-under 71 and sitting one stroke back of overall leader Alejandro Flores of Incarnate Word. Clem is in a three-way tie for third at even-par 72.
Sophomore Cade Grimm came on strong over the back nine as well, matching Clem with a 2-under 34 and rounding out the opening 18 holes with a 2-over 74, sitting in a eight-player logjam for eighth place. Junior Jarret Martin notched a 3-over 75 and is tied for 16 th overall with freshman Kason Childress rounding out the A&M-Commerce scorecard with an 8-over 80.
The Lions get set to enter Tuesday's final round with a little bit of breathing room, leading Lone Star Conference rivals Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word (9-over 297) by five strokes. Midwestern State (12-over 300) sits in fourth place while a handful of other schools remain in the hunt, including host Cameron (17-over 305) who is currently in sixth place overall.
Tuesday's final round gets underway at 8:30 a.m. as the Lions will be teamed up with the Wildcats and Cardinals, the two teams chasing them, in the final round pairings. Final results will be posted as they become available at LionAthletics.com.
