THE COLONY, Texas – A&M-Commerce sits in prime position following the opening 18 holes of the 2012 Classic at the Tribute, sitting fourth out of 13 teams with a 3-over 291. The Lions head into Tuesday's final round just four shots back of the lead in the final event of the 2012-13 fall season.
The Lions, hosting the tournament at the Tribute Golf Club for the second time, had three players ranking among the top-20 of the individual standings, led by Marcus Sanna's 3-under 69, which was highlighted by a 4-under 32 over the back nine. Cade Grimm is tied for fifth overall with a 1-under 71, two shots better than C.J. Clem's 1-over 73 as Clem is tied for 15th in the individual standings.
Rounding out the A&M-Commerce "A" team was Kason Childress with a 6-over 78, followed by Patrick Russo's 8-over 80.
A&M-Commerce also fielded a "B" team at its host tournament with the team checking in at 13th overall with a 35-over 323. Sophomore Brett Bradshaw and freshman Seth Maxwell paced the way, notching a 6-over 78 as the duo shot a 3-over 39 on both the front and back nine.
John Moug settled in at third among the Lions' "B" squaders with an 11-over 83, one shot better than both Brent Reagan and Kyle Middleton, who checked in with a 12-over 84.
A&M-Commerce, which finished fifth at last year's inaugural tournament at The Tribute, remains in the hunt for the team title as it trails McMurry, the current tournament leader, by four shots after the Warhawks posted a 1-under 287 through the opening round. Newman (1-over 289) sits in second-place while Lone Star Conference rival Cameron (2-over 290) is in third, one shot ahead of the Lions. Midwestern State rounds out the top five, posting a 4-over 292 and is one shot back of A&M-Commerce.
Tuesday's final round gets underway with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. A&M-Commerce's "A" team will be matched up with Midwestern State and Dallas Baptist in the final round pairings, teeing off from holes 5-7, while the "B" squad will face East Central and Dallas Baptist's "B" team, staring on holes 12-15.
