LION MEN OPEN UP SPRING SCHEDULE WITH ANNUAL TANGLEWOOD TRIP
COMMERCE, Texas -- A&M-Commerce's men's golf team returns to action this weekend, making its yearly pilgrimmage to Pottsboro for the 2013 Texoma Chevy Dealers Crawford Wade Intercollegiate on Monday, February 25th and Tuesday, February 26th. The field will be one of the largest in the tournament's history as 15 schools will compete for the 2013 crown.
This marks the second year that Texoma Chevy Dealers will serve as the host sponsor after a successful tournament in 2012, won by Arkansas-Fort Smith with a 22-over 886. A&M-Commerce placed sixth with a 62-over 926, highlighted by Marcus Sanna's 1-under 71 in the final round to finish tied for 16th with a 12-over 228.
Nine teams will make a repeat performance at Tanglewood as A&M-Commerce will be joined by Arkansas-Fort Smith, East Central, Harding, Oklahoma Panhandle State, Ouachita Baptist, Paris J.C., Southeastern Oklahoma State, Southern Arkansas and St. Mary's.
A handful of newcomers will also vye for the tournament title as Arkansas-Monticello, Fort Lewis (Colo.), Henderson State, McMurry and Southern Nazarene make up the 16-team field, with the Lions fielding two teams.
The tournament once again returns to Tanglewood Golf Club, a par-72, 6,536-yard course located on the Red River. 2013 marks the 19th year of the annual event, beginning in 1994 when 11 teams from the Midwest descended on Pottsboro to escape the snow. Southern Methodist University hosted the tournament for the first two years before turning it over to the current regime.
Some amazing talent has made their mark on the annual event at Tanglewood. The University of Minnesota competed in the event in 2002 en route to winning the NCAA national championship and PGA golfers Hank Kuehne (SMU), Ben Curtis (Kent State) and Luke Donald (Northwestern) each won individual championships during their collegiate careers.
The 54-hole tournament gets underway with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Monday morning, followed immediately by the second round that afternoon. Results from the first two rounds will determine the pairings for the final 18 holes, which get underway at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.
