Six Lions Garner Academic Recognition from LSC

Six student-athletes from Texas A&M University-Commerce's men's and women's track and field teams were honored by the Lone Star Conference on Wednesday, as LSC officials announced academic awards for the 2010 track and field season.

Juniors Tyler Tyndell, Robert Reed and Brandon Womack earned spots on the All-Academic Team for their athletic accomplishments as well as their academic achievements. Additionally, seniors Logan Kelly and Anthony Valle and sophomore Desiree Spencer were named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Tyndell, a junior from Paris, Texas, earned his second LSC All-Academic Team commendation, having been named to the team in 2008 for cross country. Currently, Tyndell is ranked seventh in the 5,000-meter run and ninth in the 1,500-meter run in the conference.

The nomination to the All-Academic Team is also the second for Reed, a junior from Sachse, Texas, as he too was named to the list in 2008 for cross country. Reed is currently ranked fifth in the 1,500-meter run and 11th in the 800-meter run in the conference.

The All-Academic Team honor marks a first for Womack, a junior from Lone Oak, Texas, who is having a breakout season. The middle distance runner is currently ranked second in the LSC in the 1,500-meter run, third in the 800-meter run and ninth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Valle, a senior from Saginaw, Texas, earned his third academic honor from the conference in the process of being named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll. The sprinter was named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll in 2008, as well as the All-Academic Team in 2009.

The Commissioner's Honor Roll appointment is the fourth LSC academic honor for Kelly, a graduate student from Van Alstyne, Texas. Kelly was named to the All-Academic Team for cross country in 2008 and 2009, as well as track and field in 2009.

Spencer, a sophomore from Frisco, Texas, earned Commissioner's Honor Roll commendations in her first year to be eligible for the honor.  Spencer currently ranks seventh in the LSC in the triple jump.

To be nominated for Lone Star Conference academic honors, student-athletes must carry a minimum grade point average of 3.30 and have a sophomore classification or higher both academically and athletically. Sports information directors from each school in the conference vote for individuals based on a combination of academic and athletic achievement. Athletes who meet the aforementioned academic guidelines but are not voted into the All-Academic Team are named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll.

The men's and women's track and field teams next compete in the Lone Star Conference Championships, hosted by Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, on Friday and Saturday.
