Commerce, Texas – The Lions got their chance for an upset against the Conference leading TexAnns of Tarleton State, but unfortunately, the TexAnns were not having an upset of any kind this evening. Another notorious slow start doomed the Lions as they fell back 9-0 in the first 2 minutes of the game. This is the first game this season that the Lions did not take the lead at any point in the contest.
The first half was rough from start to finish for the Lions who were outscored 42-25. Tarleton opened the game up and did not take their foot off the pedal defensively or offensively. The TexAnns started off on a 9-0 run before the Lions got their first points courtesy of Bianca Stevenson.
Leading scorer Danielle Dixon was a victim of the TexAnn defense after being shut down in the first half of the game going 0-8. Harris kept the Lions in the game by scoring 14 out of the 25 first half points for the Lions. The TexAnns closed the period out with their largest lead in the first half, when Shelby Adamson closed out the half with two free throws making it 42-25.
Unfortunately, the Lions didn't do much better in the second half still being outscored by the TexAnns 47-36. The Lion bench tried to stop the bleeding scoring a combined 23 points, and outscored the TexAnn bench who only had 17.
Sophomore Forward Breanna Harris showed up prepared for the big game setting a new career high when she scored 20 points and notched another double-double with 10 rebounds. This is the seventh double-double for Harris this season, and she is currently the only Lion to get a double-double this season.
Bianca Stevenson had an unusually quiet night only scoring 8 points, but hitting 4 out of her 5 shots. China Pippen attempted to get the Lions back into the game nailing down 3 three-pointers in the closing minutes of the game totaling 9 points for her on the evening.
The Tarleton charge was led by the Adamson sisters, who both notched double digit points and were the top two leading scorers for their team. The sisters both dropped 10 points for the TexAnns in the first half of the game. Shelby Adamson ended her night as the leading scorer for the TexAnns scoring 21 points and was trailed closely by her sister Peyton, who went 4-4 with three pointers and 2-2 on free throws scoring 18 points when all was said and done.
The Lions will get a chance to redeem themselves against the TexAnns this coming Saturday on January 21st at 5:00 PM in Stephenville, Texas. The TexAnns are currently 7-1 at the Wisdom Arena, and have extended their winning streak to 10 games with a convincing win over the Lions. This will be the Lions last chance to get a victory over the TexAnns of Tarleton State for the 2011-12 season.
