AMARILLO, Texas -- A&M-Commerce struggled over the final 18 holes of the season-opening West Texas A&M Lady Buff Stampede, shooting a 43-over 331 and sliding back to 10th-place in the team standings. The Lions close out the 36-hole tournament with a 75-over 651, but manage to notch their first top-10 finish of the season.
Junior Chantry McMahan entered the day tied for first in the individual standings, then posted a 5-over 77 in round two to finish the tournament with a 6-over 150, good enough for a tie for third-place. It marks McMahan's 10th top-10 finish of her A&M-Commerce career as she has now placed in the top five six times in her career.
Freshman Ali Leasor began the day tied for fifth after a 3-over 75 in round one, but struggled to find her groove in round two, posting a 17-over 89 to close out her first collegiate tournament with a 20-over 164. She finished three strokes better than junior Sara Diaz, who shaved five shots off her opening round total to post a 9-over 81 in round two and finish with a 23-over 167 for the tournament.
Junior Holly Jenkins also improved on her opening round of the season, shooting a 12-over 84 in round two and finishing with a 26-over 170. Fellow junior Chelsea McCoy rounded out the Lion scorecard with a 39-over 183.
A&M-Commerce closed out the season-opening tournament four shots back of both host West Texas A&M and Western Texas C.C. (71-over 647), who tied for eighth overall, and was nine shots back of fellow Lone Star Conference rival Angelo State (66-over 642). Colorado State-Pueblo, the team A&M-Commerce was tied with heading into the final round, remained in sixth placed with a 65-over 641.
Lubbock Christian held on to win the team title, posting a 43-over 619 and holding off LSC rival Midwestern State (47-over 623) by four strokes. Newman (52-over 628), Cameron (55-over 631) and Wayland Baptist (63-over 639) rounded out the top-five of the team standings.
The Lions will return to action next week, traveling to San Angelo for the 2012 Angelo State Concho River Classic, being held at Tierra Verde Golf Course September 17 and 18.
