SAN ANGELO, Texas – A&M-Commerce returned to the links Monday morning, posting a seventh-place finish after the opening round of the 2012 Angelo State Concho River Classic at the Tierra Verde Golf Club. The Lions shot a 26-over 314 in round one, trailing a pair of Lone Star Conference rivals by five strokes for a tie for fifth.
Junior Chantry McMahan continued her strong start to the season, tying her season-low with a 1-over 73 in round one, highlighted by a 2-under 34 on the back nine. McMahan is tied for fourth in the individual standings and has a six shot lead on junior teammate Haley Green, who posted a 7-over 79 in her first action of the season.
Junior Sara Diaz sits one stroke back of Green, posting an 8-over 80 as the duo each shot a 3-over 39 over the opening nine holes. Freshman Ali Leasor is two shots back after registering a 10-over 82 and leads junior teammate Chelsea McCoy by two shots after her opening round 12-over 84.
The Lions, playing their second tournament of the season, remain in the middle of the pack among the 13-team field, holding a four-stroke advantage over eighth-place Cameron (30-over 318) and lead ninth-place Western Washington (33-over 321) by seven shots. A&M-Commerce remains within striking distance of its first top-five finish of the season, sitting five shots back of both Incarnate Word and host Angelo State (21-over 309), who are tied for fifth after the opening 18 holes.
St. Edward's has taken control of the top spot after round one, shooting a 9-over 297 and holding a three-stroke advantage on Midwestern State (12-over 300). Newman sits in third (15-over 303) with LSC rival Tarleton State in fourth (16-over 304), leading both the Cardinals and Rambelles by five shots with 18 holes to play.
Tuesday's final round gets underway at 8:30 a.m. as A&M-Commerce will be teamed up with Cameron and Western Washington in the final round pairings. Full results will be posted at LionAthletics.com as they become available.
