COMMERCE, Texas – A&M-Commerce opened up its 2012 track and field season hosting the Lion Preseason Invitational at Memorial Stadium Friday, February 24. Six teams descended on Commerce as the Lions had 17 competitors record top-five finishes, including five first-place finishes.
In the sprints, A&M-Commerce had a strong showing in the 100 meter dash, paced by a first-place finish by Anthony Reed (12.12). Vanessa Jackson notched a runner-up finish in the 200 meter (25.23), as did Brooke Odom in the 400 meter (59.96). A&M-Commerce's 4x400 meter relay team also had a first-place finish, posting a time of 4:02.70.
The Lion distance runners also saw some early season success as Jennifer Speer and Caroline Cotsakis finished second and third in the 1500 meter run while Brooke Ferris outlasted a handful of competitors to finish second in the 3000 meter steeplechase.
A handful of Lions also had impressive performances in the field events, highlighted by first-place finishes by Whitney Hargraves in the long jump (5.40m), Tierra Hill in the triple jump (10.69m) and Ashley Ross in both the shot put (10.97m) and hammer throw (28.75m) with a second-place finish in the discus (38.48m).
A&M-Commerce now heads to San Antonio for the Incarnate Word Invitational on Friday, March 2 and Saturday, March 3. Results will be posted on LionAthletics.com as they become available.
