CONWAY, Ark. – A&M-Commerce made a last-minute adjustment to its schedule, but came away with impressive results as 15 different Lion athletes recorded top-five finishes in eight different events at the 2012 Hendrix Invitational.
Once again, the A&M-Commerce jumpers and throwers made their mark, recording eight top-five finishes in five events, including first place finishes by Whitney Hargraves in the long jump (5.49 meters) and Abigail Leaupepe-Tele in the discus (43.43 meters). Hargraves also placed second in the triple jump (10.95 meters) while Leaupepe-Tele recorded a runner-up finish in the shot put (12.16 meters) in her first event of the season for the Lions. Desiree Spencer also had a pair of top-five finishes, finishing fourth in both the long jump (4.69m) and triple jump (9.87m).
The Lions sprinters also had a strong showing, led by a runner-up finish by Angela Reed in the 200 meter dash (25.12). Three Lions placed in the top-five in the 100 meter dash, led by Reed's 12.45 with Jakesia King finishing fourth (12.68) and K'Nycha Johnson placing fifth in both the 100 meter (12.81) and 200 meter (26.08).
Jennifer Speer (20:00.36) and Caroline Cotsakis (20:09.23) finished second and third respectively in the 5000 meter run, matching their result from the Lion Preseason Invitational on February 24.
A&M-Commerce added the meet after withdrawing from the Tarleton Invitational earlier this week. The meet was schedule to be held Thursday, March 8, but inclement weather in the Stephenville area pushed the meet to Tuesday, March 6, but the Lion coaching staff opted not to participate after competing in the Incarnate Word Invitational three days earlier.
The Lions now have two weeks before returning to the track, this time making the short trip to Arlington for the Bobby Lane Invitational on Saturday, March 24. The meet will be held at Maverick Stadium on the campus of UT-Arlington, with the finals set for Saturday afternoon.
