COMMERCE, Texas – Our #14 moment of the year takes us out to the track of Memorial Stadium as the women's track team had a number of impressive performances, including setting three school records on the season and coming within a whisker of setting a pair of others.
The A&M-Commerce 4x100 meter relay team actually set the school record three times in 2012, besting the previous mark of 47.17 set in 1990. The Lions ran a 47.10 at the Bobby Lane Invitational on March 24, as the team of Angela Reed, Aysha Moultrie, Crystal Harris and Vanessa Jackson shattered the 12-year old mark on the track at UT-Arlington. The Lions also ran a 47.11 at the Mt. SAC Relays and LSC Championships as all three times were provisional qualifying marks.
The Lion 4x400 meter relay team also etched its name in the A&M-Commerce record books, running a 3:49.74 at the Lone Star Conference Championships. The team of Brooke Odom, Moultrie, Tyler Cottingham and Jackson placed fifth at the conference meet on its home track, besting the previous school mark of 3:51.12 set in 1990 as well.
Moultrie also solidified her place in the Lion record book, running a 24.77 in the 200 meter dash as part of the heptathlon at the 2012 Lone Star Conference Championships in Commerce, besting the previous school record of 24.84 set by Kerri Henderson in 2004. The time also set a new LSC mark for the 200 in the heptathlon as Moultrie would go on to place third in the event, racking up 4,884 points, which would be enough to qualify for the national meet.
Two other school records came close to being broken as well on the year, including the 100 meter dash where Angela Reed posted an 11.95 in the preliminaries of the Lone Star Conference Championships, finishing three-tenths of a second back of Kizzy Lovald's mark of 11.67 which has stood since 1967, the longest-standing record in program history.
Jackson posted a season-low mark of 56.68 in the 400 meter dash, finishing just shy of the 56.04 time posted by Carlita Smith in 1981.
