LION MEN FINISH FIRST, WOMEN THIRD AT LOIS DAVIS INVITATIONAL

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Texas A&M University-Commerce’s men’s and women’s cross country teams returned to action, competing at the 2011 Southern Arkansas Lois Davis Invitational. The men won their second meet of the season, placing six runners in the top-10 with the women finishing third with a pair of top-10 finishers.

On the men side, the Lions notched 20 points on the morning, defeating host Southern Arkansas (35 pts.) by 15 points. Fredrick Kipsang posted a runner-up finish in the 8,000-meter run, posting a season-best time of 26:24. He edged out a pack of Lion teammates that finished finished fourth through seventh, led by Isaac Chelimo’s fourth-place finish (26:40).

Everett Wilder finished fifth for the Lions (26:58), followed by Alex Kimp (26:58) in sixth and Raymond Mata (27:23) in seventh. Tyler Hemenway rounded out the Lion top-10 finishers, placing 10th with a time of 28:04. Ross Hicks (28:37), David Najera (29:54) and Donald Rightenour (30:40) also competed for the Lions.

On the women’s side, A&M-Commerce finished with 54 points in the 5,000-meter run, 11 back of second-place Grambling State and 24 behind first-place Southern Arkansas. The Lady Lions saw a pair of top-10 finishes, led by Brooke Farris’ fourth-place showing with a time 20:12. Teammate Jennifer Speer also landed a top-10 finish, placing eighth on the morning (20:30).

Audrie Vela (20:48) just missed a top-10 finish, placing 11th for the Lions, while Caroline Cotsakis (20:55) checked in at 12th. Kendall Christmas also competd for A&M-Commerce, logging a time of 22:24 to finish 22nd.

The race at Southern Arkansas marks the final tune-up for the Lions before the 2011 Lone Star Conference Championships on Saturday, October 22. Angelo State will serve as the host institution for this year’s championship.
