A&M-Commerce looks to build on its recent success heading to Lawton, Okla. for the 2012 Lone Star Conference Cross Country Championships, hosted by Cameron University. The men's 8K race gets underway at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning, followed by the women's 6K race at 10:30 a.m.
Both the Lion men and women are eager to improve from their preseason Lone Star Conference standings. The A&M-Commerce men were picked third, the same spot where they finished in last season's LSC Championships, while the women were picked ninth. In 2011, both Isaac Chelimo and Everett Wilder earned All-Lone Star Conference honors as A&M-Commerce is hoping to add to that total on both the men's and women's sides.
RECAPPING 2012 SEASON
MEN
The Men Cross Country team was picked to finish third in the Preseason Poll before the season started will look to try to better that ranking and challenge Eastern New Mexico and Abilene Christian for the conference title. The Lions did capture one team and one individual title this season when the team won the title at the Lois Davis Invitational, at Southern Arkansas, and Dorian McCradic took home the individual crown at the same meet. At Southern Arkansas the Lions placed all seven runners inside the top eight. A&M-Commerce finished either second or third when they were running against LSC opponents. The Lions have been led by freshmen Dorian McCradic. He has been the highest finisher in each event the team has competed in. Luis Romero, Fredrick Kipsang, Everett Wilder have placed inside the top 70 during the season.
WOMEN
Freshmen Mary Hammonds and Tori Lenz-Selvera have each finished as the top runner for the Lions this season. Hammonds led the way at the Cowboy Jamboree with an 80th place finish, and Lenz-Selvera pacing the Lions in the other three events including a fourth place finish when the Lions won the Lois Davis Invitational at Southern Arkansas. Caroline Cotsakis, Jennifer Speer and Katia Romero all finished in the top ten along with Hammonds and Lenz-Selvera to take home the title. The Lions will look to exceed expectations in Lawton and try to get pass Texas A&M-Kingsville and maybe Incarnate Word to not finish last in the conference.
The Lions will run again at the NCAA Regionals in Denver, Colorado in two weeks. After regionals is when the qualifiers will be determined for the National Championships for both team and individuals. The National Championships will be in Joplin, Missouri on November 17.
