Head coach Bob Rogers led East Texas State to the school's first ever national championship and the men's basketball program's only national championship, leading the Lions to a 29-5 record in the 1954-55 season on their way to the NAIA Men's Basketball Championship. He finished his five-year coaching stint at ETSU with a record of 111-34, which remains the best winning percentage (.766) in program history.
In his five years as coach, Rogers direct the Lions to four Lone Star Conference championships and a second place finish. He led the Lions to three NAIA Tournaments, also leading the team to a semifinal appearance in 1952-53 and a quarterfinal appearance in 1953-54. The Lions won at least 20 games in four of his five seasons as coach, all of which produced LSC Championships.
Rogers coached three players to five NAIA All-America awards and coached four players to 10 All-Conference awards. Four of his players (Jim Miller, Shelby Metcalf, Clarence Lynch and Jerry Matthews) have been inducted into the Lion Hall of Fame, as well as the entire 1954-55 NAIA Championship team.
