Clarence "Rex" Stultz was a multi-sport athlete at East Texas State from 1939-43. He lettered in football, track and tennis. He was named First Team All-LSC as a tailback in 1942 and was named an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American, helping lead the Lions to the 1942 LSC Championship.

After graduating in 1943, he joined the armed forces to fight in World War II. After serving in Europe for 31 months, he returned to East Texas State to earn his master's degree.
