Wester was named a First Team All-American by four different organizations in his senior season. The offensive lineman was a major contributor to the Lions winning the NAIA Division I Championship. He was named First Team All-LSC as a senior and was named LSC Outstanding Lineman of the Year, the only offensive player to win the award when the award included defensive players. He was named to the All-LSC Team of the Decade for the 1970's.
Wester came to ETSU in 1969 as a guard, but days before the second game of his freshman season, the starting tackle quit the team and Lion and LSC Hall of Fame coach Ernest Hawkins switched Wester to tackle. The move would help the Lions win the 1969 LSC title. Wester was switched back to guard in his senior season to utilize his speed, which contributed to the Lions' LSC Championship and NAIA National Championship.
Wester went on to be drafted in the ninth round of the NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns but opted to play for the Canadian Football League instead, earning All-Pro honors.
