Under head coach Ernest Hawkins, East Texas State rode the arm of Hall of Fame quarterback Wade Wilson to a 8-3-1 mark, capturing the Lone Star Conference championship. The Lions then defeated Central Arkansas 27-21 in the first round of the NAIA playoffs before falling to Elon College 14-6.
