Track and Field • 1959-61
Schaefer won an NAIA National Championship in 1959 as part of the 4x880-yard relay team and was a three-time First Team All-Lone Star Conference selection in his three years on the Lion track and field team. He was a part of two LSC championship teams. He helped set three team relay records and an LSC relay record in his time at ETSU.
Schaefer joined Clyde Harris, Jim Baird and Sidney Garton (Baird and Garton are fellow Lion Hall of Famers) to set the ETSU and LSC records of 40.7 seconds in the 440-yard relay in 1959. Also in 1959, he ran with Harris, Garton and John West at the Texas Relays to set a record of 1:25.1 in the 880-yard relay. He was also a part of the 1960 sprint medley team that set the school record.
In all three of his LSC meets, Schaefer finished second in the 100 and 200-yard sprints and carried the baton on the winning 440-yard relay teams. At the NAIA Championships, he finished fourth in 1959 and third in 1960 in the 100-yard dash. He also finished second in the 220-yard dash in 1960 and third in 1959. His times in the 100-yard and 220-yard dash, as well as in the relays helped the Lions finish runner-up for the NAIA team championship in both 1959 and 1960.
