Jon Gilliam was a three-year letterman for the East Texas State Lions. He was a two-time Honorable Mention All-Conference selection at center. He was a part of three consecutive Lone Star Conference championship teams and two Tangerine Bowl victories. During his time with the Lions, the team went 28-3 under Lion Hall of Fame coach J.V. Sikes.
Gilliam went on to play eight seasons in the AFL/NFL as an offensive lineman for the Dallas Texans and the Kansas City Chiefs. He played for the Chiefs in Super Bowl I after the Chiefs won the 1966 AFL Championship. He was also a member of the 1962 AFL Champion Dallas Texans team.
