Basketball • 1972-76
The 5-foot 10-inch O'Neal Tarrant finished his career as one of the most decorated basketball players in school history. He was named an All-American four times (Honorable Mention NAIA as a sophomore, Second Team NAIA and Honorable Mention Associated Press as a junior and Third Team NAIA as a senior). He was the 1972-73 Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year, the 1973-74 LSC Most Valuable Player and a four-time All-LSC selection.
Tarrant led the Lions in scoring in three of his four seasons, averaging 20.0 points per game in his career, including 23.0 points per game in his MVP season. He is still the program record holder in free throws made and ranks both second in points scored and field goals made. He helped lead the Lions to a share of the 1973-74 LSC Championship, the 14th conference championship in program history and the first one in 10 seasons.
