Women's Tennis • 1978-80

Sharon, a native of Gladewater, transferred in from Tyler Junior College and quickly established herself as one of the best players in Lion women’s tennis history. She alternated playing No. 1 and No. 2 singles and doubles in both her seasons at A&M-Commerce. In her first season, the Lions advanced to the 1979 AIAW Division II National Championships in Denver and finished the season ranked No. 8. In 1980, the Lions once again advanced to the AIAW Division II National Championships in Los Angeles and had a team finish of No. 13. Sharon had a doubles record of 23-8 in 1980 and received the 1979 Lib Huggins Award, given to most outstanding female student-athlete, who exhibits competitive spirit, sportsmanship, athletic ability, and contributes to women’s athletics at A&M-Commerce. She is also the founding member of the Golden Leos student recruitment organization and received the outstanding women’s tennis player award from East Texas State in 1980.
