Dr. Bill Crabtree, the Lion Hall of Fame tennis coach who coached the Lions to two NAIA Championships and 12 LSC titles, described Wayne Hirst as the "the best tennis player ever to play at ETSU." Wayne and his brother Jerry Hirst dominated the Lone Star Conference in the 1960's. In 1965, when the Lions were runnersup for the NAIA Championship, Wayne reached the national semifinals in singles and doubles with his brother. He won the LSC singles championship earlier that season, defeating his brother in the final. The brothers were also LSC Doubles Champions. He also reached the NAIA semifinals in both singles and doubles in 1961.
