Doug Caison joined the A&M-Commerce staff as a full-time volunteer assistant coach for the 2016 season after volunteering on a part-time basis in the fall of 2015. To begin the 2017 season, he was hired as the full-time pitching and catching coach. He is also responsible for scouting and observing opponent's tendencies in preparation for game day strategies and oversee the team’s strength and conditioning program.
During the 2017 season under Caison's leadership, several program records were achieved in the circle. The team posted its lowest ERA in school history along with the most shutouts, most saves, fewest hits allowed, fewest runs allowed, fewest home runs allowed and lowest opponent's batting average. As a whole, the pitching staff led the LSC in saves, was third in opponent batting average and fourth in ERA.
Caison was instrumental in the coaching of freshman Kinsie Hebler, who pitched the first two no-hitters in program history. She was named First Team All-LSC and Second Team All-South Central Region as a utility pitcher. Hebler also set the single-season record for lowest opponent batting average, was second in the LSC in hits allowed per seven innings pitched, was second in opponent batting average and seventh in ERA. Katie Dean also received recognition, being named LSC Pitcher of the Week. Behind the plate, catcher Mariah Jameyson was named Second Team All-American by the NFCA, FPN and D2CCA, making Jameyson the first All-American in school history. Jameyson was also selected First Team All-South Central Region, First Team All-Conference, LSC Newcomer of the Year, lead the nation in home runs per seven innings and was the nation's regular season RBI leader. Defensively, Jameyson lead the conference in runners caught stealing. She was also selected as the NFCA National Player of the Week in March.
In 2016, Caison helped the Lions become the first team in Division I and II history to earn a berth in the NCAA tournament in a program's second year of existence.  The Lions made the South Central Regional Tournament and had one win, ending the season with an overall record of 37-19. The Lions finished third in the Lone Star Conference in a surprise surge from preseason predictions. Twice the team received votes in the National Fastpitch Coaches Associations (NFCA) Top 25 Coaches Poll for Division II softball, gaining national recognition from coaches across the country.
Prior to joining the A&M-Commerce staff in the fall of 2015, Caison was heavily involved in East Texas youth softball. He is a One-Star Master Coach and a registered member of the NFCA. He also holds a level-three certification from the  American Softball Association.
In addition to his softball experience, Caison brings a unique perspective of life experience to the team. He has served more than twenty years in the fire service, with the last eight years as City of Greenville Fire Chief. He was a member of Texas Task Force I & II Search and Rescue Teams, worked as a police officer, rodeo cowboy, served in an elite military unit and trained aspiring candidates for U.S. Military Special Operations.Â
A graduate of Colorado State University, Caison and his wife Surrey have one daughter, Mia.
