COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M University-Commerce women's basketball ended non-conference play and the 2023 calendar year with an 87-63 loss in Reed Arena on Sunday against Texas A&M.
Sunday was the first meeting between the Aggies and the Lions. The Lions end non-conference play at 5-5, marking the first time in the Division I era that the Lions are .500 or better in non-conference play. Texas A&M has won 10 in a row and is 12-1 on the season, receiving votes in the Associated Press poll.
The Lions started the game shooting 2 for 2 from outside the arc with
Mia Deck (Frisco – Lone Star) and
Ahmya Boyce (Newport News, Va.) making a shot each from deep. Boyce scored seven of the first 12 points for the Lions.
After starting the game shooting 3 for 4 from the field, the Lions went 1 for their next 11, as the Aggies took a 20-12 lead, the Lions went on a 7-0 run over a stretch of one minute and 17 seconds to make it a one-point game, but the Aggies scored the next 18 points to take their largest lead of the game up to that point.
Texas A&M ended the first quarter shooting 1 for its last 11 to end the first quarter, while A&M-Commerce shot 2 for 12. The Lions were held scoreless in the second quarter until a three-pointer by
Jordyn Newsome (Irving – MacArthur) at the 4:44 mark. The Lions were outscored 25-7 in the second quarter.
Late in the fourth quarter, the Lions put together a 12-2 run, to cut into the Texas A&M lead.
In the game, the Lions were outrebounded 71-42, with the Aggies holding a 17-10 advantage in second-chance points.
Deck led the team with 14 points, while Newsome scored 12 and
Dorian Norris (Lake Dallas) added 11 off the bench.
Jordyn Beaty (Woodville),
Mary Delgado (Miami, Fla.), and Newsome picked up six rebounds each. Deck, Boyce, and Delgado dished out three assists each as well.
For the Aggies, Janiah Barker and Lauren Ware scored 19 points each. Ware had a double-double with 16 rebounds.
