COMMERCE – Despite 16 points and eight rebounds from
Tiani Ellison, the East Texas A&M University women's basketball team was downed 64-48 by the Lamar Cardinals on Wednesday afternoon on the Hunt Regional Healthcare Court in the Field House.
The Cardinals led for all but 41 seconds in the game to move to 6-5 on the season and 3-1 against Southland Conference opponents, while the Lions snapped a two-game winning streak and fall to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
With the score tied at five in the first quarter at the 6:59 mark, Lamar scored the next six and the game was not tied again nor did the Cardinals trail in the game. The Lions got to within two in the first, but Lamar had an eight-point lead at the end of the quarter and extended it to as high as 20 in the third quarter.
The Lions shot 31 percent in the game, starting the game missing 11 of their first 13 shots from the field in the first quarter. Lamar shot 44 percent in the game. The two teams combined to miss 17 shots at the line in the game.
Lamar had the 39-28 edge in rebounding with T'Aaliyah Miner recording a double-double off the bench, totaling 10 points and 11 rebounds. R'Mani Taylor shot 5 for 9 from the field including 3 for 3 from deep for team-best 13 points. The rest of the Cardinal team went 2 for 14 from the distance.
On the Lions side of the box score, Ellison (Durant, Okla.) went 8 for 11 at the line for her 16 points. She also recorded five blocks and was the only Lion to score in double digits. Off the bench,
Rezia Castillo (Houston – Clear Brook) had team-best five assists as well as three points.
