Top Moment No. 13: Dibbern Named Track & Field Head Coach

The 2013-14 A&M-Commerce athletic season was filled with a handful of incredible moments, achievements and career milestones. Throughout the summer Lion Athletics will take a look back at the top 15 moments of the year, voted on by athletic administrators and local media members.
A&M-Commerce brought in a new leader for its track and field program in September when athletics director Ryan Ivey brought in Tom Dibbern from Angelo State, and it did not take long for positive results to surface for the Lions.

Dibbern was a two-time National Assistant Coach of the Year while at ASU, coaching two national champions, 29 Lone Star Conference Champions and 31all-America relay teams when there. He had also helped the Rambelles to five straight LSC team crowns since 2009, including the 2010 Division II national championship.

After arriving in Commerce, he quickly filled out his staff with former Lion trackster Robert Reed and former Central Missouri track standout Ross Smithey. They then turned their attention to directing the Lions to a return to the indoor season, where the Lion men finished in third place, just two points shy of second.

They also finished with five selections for the NCAA Indoor Championships, including Brikel Bailey (800-meter run), Anthony Harris (long jump), Dorian McCradic (1,600-meter run), Luis Romero (1,600-meter run) and Matt Rich (heptathalon).

The success of the indoor season fueled momentum into the outdoor season, where the Lion men found themselves a part of the national rankings throughout the season, finishing third a the LSC Championships.

But the Lions managed to qualify nine athletes for the NCAA Division II Outdoor championships in Grand Rapids, Mich., - K'Don Samuels (pole vault), John Davis Rollins (400-meter dash), Anthony Harris (long jump), Matt Rich (decathalon), Hendrick Nungess (decathalon and javelin), Luis Romero (800-meter run), Brikel Bailey (800-meter run) and the 4x400 relay team of Rollins, Dexter Lee, Harris and Adam Gary.

The Lion men finished in 12th place at the national meet, with each of the nine Lion athletes earning all-America honors.
