Thrower Center for Student-Athlete Success
The Thrower Center for Student-Athlete Success is located in the northeast corner of The Field House on the campus of Texas A&M University-Commerce and provides a home for academic services and development for student-athletes. The staff is dedicated to working with Lion athletic teams to ensure that all of our student-athletes are balancing the athletic, academic, and social responsibilities that arise during their time in college.
Academic standards and requirements for student-athletes at Texas A&M University-Commerce are no less stringent than for the general student population. Both the University and the Department of Athletics are aware that participation in intercollegiate athletics makes exceptional demands upon a student-athlete's time and energy. Therefore, the department is committed to provide an academic support program to help student-athletes achieve their full academic potential.

Academic Advising
The Athletic Academic Advisors at Texas A&M University-Commerce provide academic counseling to every student-athlete. Athletic Academic Advisors help student-athletes develop strategies to balance academics with the demands of a competitive NCAA Division II athletic schedule and the student-athletes' personal growth.
Athletic Academic Advisors:
- Meet with student-athletes to discuss academic progress and any personal concerns
- Support student-athletes in selection of majors and course registration. Document student-athlete academic performance and NCAA eligibility
- Provide academic information to prospective student-athletes and parents during campus visits
- Reinforce time management, study skills, and basked learning values and intervention strategies
- Promote independence and lifelong learning
Academic Monitoring Tools
Staff, with the assistance of EAB, a web-based management system and additional university software systems that generate and utilize the following:
- Academic progress and class attendance reports
- Tutor feedback reports
- Monitored study hours
- Eligibility Reports
Tutoring Services
Athletic Academic Services maintains a tutoring staff in a wide variety of academic disciplines. The tutors are an integral part of a team effort to help student-athletes succeed at Texas A&M University-Commerce. Tutors work with individuals and small groups. Appointment notes are reviewed daily by the athletic academic services staff members.
Emerging Scholar Program
Assessment of incoming and returning student-athletes who have been identified having factors that may create risk in the student-athlete experience are allocated support based on their individual needs. Student-Athletes who are emerging scholars will be assigned a mentor and weekly meetings to help develop an academic plan for success.
