Four Lions had had double digit kills as the
host Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball team posted a
31-33, 25-14, 21-25, 25-20, 15-11 win over Central Oklahoma in a
crucial match in the Lone Star Conference on Thursday night.
A&M-Commerce (20-7, 5-3 LSC) junior Naomi
Mays led the Lions with 19 kills in the win. Junior Terra
Ousley (pictured ) and freshman
Rachel Robertson, who each had 13 and 12; joined
her in double figures plus, freshman Reagan Hayes
had 10 more. The Lions attack managed to out hit the Bronchos by a
.222 to a .196 margin. In addition, A&M-Commerce overcome 11
service errors in the win with nine service aces including a
match-high four from freshman Ashleigh Barnett.
The Lions reach the 20-win plateau for the first time since the
2002 season.
Central Oklahoma (11-14, 3-6 LSC) was led by
Zuela Adom, who had 21 kills on 65 swings for a .246 hitting
percentage. Kristen Wilson and Carly LeMay, who had 17 and 11
kills, respectively, joined her in double figures. Adom and LeMay
combined for 38 of the 62 kills on 125 attempts. Setter Meagan
Wedberg had 47 assists for a double double as three UCO players had
double double performances. In addition to Wedberg, Wilson had 24
digs to go along with 17 kills, and Adom added 11 digs on her 21
kills.
Trailing by a two set to one advantage,
A&M-Commerce rallied to take the fourth and decisive fifth set.
In the final two sets, the Lions had 30 kills and just four
errors.
During the fourth set, Mays and Hayes had six
and four kills, respectively. Barnett added two service aces and
senior Lauren Flynn had 10 of her match-high 40
digs. The Lions found themselves behind until a bad set by UCO and
three-straight kills by A&M-Commerce gave the Lions a 16-13
lead. It would be a lead that the Lions would not relinquish to tie
the match at two sets apiece.
In the fifth set, the two teams exchanged
points until a service error at 9-9 by UCO gave the Lions a spark.
A&M-Commerce capitalized to take an 11-9 lead on an attack
error and a kill by Ousley. The Bronchos managed to cut the deficit
to one but three more kills by Mays and another by Ousley gave the
Lions the victory.
Next, A&M-Commerce will hold senior day
activities on Saturday at 2 pm when they host Southwestern Oklahoma
State at the A&M-Commerce Field House.
