The Texas A&M
University-Commerce volleyball team snapped a six-match losing
streak with a five-set, 25-16, 13-25, 29-27, 20-25, 15-7 win over
Incarnate Word on Friday.
A&M-Commerce (5-9) had four
players with double-digit kills, including double double
performances from senior Naomi
Mays and sophomore Morgan
Moeller. It is the first career double double for
Moeller, who had 13 kills and a career-best 17 digs; plus Mays had
12 kills and a match-high and career-high 19 digs.

Ousley posted 11 kills and had four block assists and
sophomore Rachel
Robertson led the attack with a career-high 22 kills
and six blocks. Setting the attack for the Lions was freshman
Jordan
Neal, who had a season-best 57 assists. Not to go
unnoticed was the play of sophomore Reagan
Hayes, who had 15 digs and three service aces.
Incarnate Word (4-7) was led by Chera Smith and Stephanie Bonura,
who had 12 and 10 kills, respectively in the loss.
"I was proud of how we kept
plugging away over the past few matches," said head coach
Craig Case. "We came out and played tonight very
smart and aggressive. The players earned this one."
In the opening set, the Lions led from start to finish, racing out
to a 5-1 advantage and not looking back. It was the first time that
the Lions had won the opening set in six matches.
A&M-Commerce fell behind in the
second set by a 7-2 margin and the Cardinals evened the match at a
set apiece. In the set, UIW was without a hitting error and hit at
a .611 clip.
The battle for the third set was
intense as it was tied on 13 occasions, including six lead changes
but it was the Lions, who prevailed with a 29-27 victory and two
sets to one advantage. Robertson had seven kills; Moeller and Mays
each had six digs to lead A&M-Commerce.
The Cardinals came back to tie the
match at two sets apiece, winning the fourth set. UIW had a shared
and potent attack with three different players recording three
kills each and a hitting attack that hit .237.
In the fifth and decisive set, the
Lions jumped out to a 6-0 advantage on the strength of freshman
server Kallie
Carpenter. Plus, in the early run, Robertson added two
more kills and a block solo, Mays had a kill and a block solo and
Hayes had a kill. A kill by Ousley and a service ace by Hayes
clinched the victory.
The Lions will close out the
weekend with a trip to Texas A&M-International on Saturday 2
p.m.
