PORTALES, N.M. - The Lions put the ultimate cherry on top of their 13-5 season Sunday by beating ENMU (9-7 overall, 6-4 in conference), 1-0, and snatching their first LSC regular season title by finishing 7-3 in conference. Coupled with last night's LSC Title going to the Lions Football team, this is the first time in school-history that two fall sports have collected conference titles in the same season.
Â
After a scrum ensued in the front of the Zias' net, the ball was headed to
Jade Bell who found a bit of daylight and emerged as the hero by nudging home her ninth goal of the season and third game-winner (62') past ENMU keeper Fabienne Wilson. Bell finished the regular season with a conference-leading seven assists as well as finishing fourth in the conference in goals.
Â
In a game with powerful gusts of wind throughout, the first half of play produced no scoring, yet each team manifested close scoring chances in different ways. The Zias outshot the Lions 7-4, including an Alyssa Prince shot that careened off the post. However, the Lions answered with chances of their own, with five corner kick opportunities, as well as an
Ashley Phillips shot early in the half which was rejected by the crossbar. By the time the game was over, midfielder
Callie Annett led all players on the field with 4 shots.
Â
"They were all over us in the first half. I thought they were probably the better team for that stretch," said
Neil Piper, who claims his third season-title as the A&M-Commerce head coach, "Their defense played great, and it was pretty much even there in the second until we scored a scrappy goal."
Â
Keeper
Courtnie Northern returned to action for the Lions, pulling off her seventh shutout of the year, stopping both ENMU shots on goal that found their way on net. She finishes the regular season with an 11-5 record, 91 saves, a conference-leading .892 save percentage and a 0.67 GAA.
Â
The Lions, who pick up their first regular season LSC title since 2003, will now transition back home to host the conference tournament, where they will try and pick up their first LSC tournament-title since 2004.
Â
Thanks to a West Texas A&M win over the vistiting TWU Pioneers, Texas Woman's is eliminated from the tournament, meaning the Lions will begin the tournament by hosting the Midwestern State Mustangs, who the Lions split the season-series with. The other opening round matchup of the tournament will be the Angelo State Rambelles and the Eastern New Mexico Zias both traveling to Commerce to duke it out in a neutral site matchup.
Â
Both conference tournament games are slated for Friday, November 7. Times for those contests have not yet been announced.
