Commerce, Texas – The A&M-Commerce basketball team dominated against Sul Ross State behind a double- double from
Darrell Williams, who scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season, as the Lions hit the century mark for the second straight game in 100-75 win over the Lobos Monday night in the home opener inside the Lion Field House.
The Lions offense spread the ball around and had five players in double figures.
Everrett Pleasant had a great second half scoring 10 of his 12 points in the half and was 6-for-9 from the floor. Pleasant finished the game with a double-double ending with 10 boards.
JR Owens finished the game 2-for-3 from behind the ark and scored 14 points.
Eddie Leal turned in a great all-around performance scoring 13 points to go along with four assists and grabbing six rebounds. Newly named Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week,
LaDon Carnegie tallied 12 points and three assists. Diminutive guard
Anthony Adams had 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. Leal and
De'Andre Carson handed four assists each as the Lions continually found high percentage shots at the basket en route to a 49 percent field goal percentage. A&M-Commerce continued their high percentage from the charity stripe to a tune of 83 percent with 19 made free throws on 23 attempts.
After accounting for six double-doubles in 28 games a season ago, the Lions have recorded six in five games this season highlighted by Williams' three.
The Lions dominated the glass outrebounding the Lobos 52-34 and that led to 23 second chance points for the Lions. A&M-Commerce took control in the first half taking a 44-26 lead into the locker room.
The Lions ran away with the game in the second half outscoring Sul Ross State 56-46 as the Lions completely controlled the game from start to finish with the 100-75 win. The Lions hit the 100-point mark in back-to-back games for the first time since the 2006-07 season when A&M-Commerce scored in triple digits in three straight games -- 111-106 double overtime loss at Central Oklahoma, 110-102 loss at Southwestern Oklahoma and 102-83 win at home against Cameron.
"We needed that game at this point in time after coming off of two losses, especially the last one where I thought we played really well and lost," A&M-Commerce head coach
Sam Walker said. "We played solid tonight and did what we needed to do to get back on track."
The Lions head west for the Thanksgiving weekend to partake in the California Baptist Thanksgiving Classic, in Riverside, Cali. A&M-Commerce will play Dixie State at 6:30 p.m. central time on Friday, November 28 and tournament host California Baptist on Saturday, November 29 with tip-off for that game is scheduled for 9 p.m. central time.
