ARKADELPHIA, ARK. – Lions soccer got a much needed bounce-back victory out of Sunday's trip to Arkansas, beating the Ouachita Baptist Tigers 2-0 and rising to 5-2-0.
After a brief feeling-out process for the first five minutes of the game, the Lions took control of the pace and never gave it back. The Lions peppered the Tigers with 13 shots in the first half, before finally breaking through in the thirty-eighth minute when
Julia Hernandez got one by OBU keeper
Katy Alexander off of a
Jade Bell pass. Six minutes later,
Jade Bell (44') scored her fourth of the season on a long kick from nearly 25 yards out that sailed over Alexander's reach.
In the second half, the Lions maintained pressure and kept the scoring up. After more of the same,
Savannah Henderson hammered home her fifth goal of the season (62') on a pass from
Jade Bell. Henderson would go on to score again (84'), her sixth, blasting one from the top of the box on a setup from
Madison Cordts.
When all was said and done, the Lions had played almost the entire game in control of the posessions, outshooting the Tigers 26-8, and limiting OBU's ability to generate many quality chances.
"The box score will never show it, but I think
Sydney Lawthers was our player of the game," said coach
Neil Piper, "She was winning so many battles for us, whether it was in the middle on loose balls, stonewalling defenders, or just upsetting their rhythm. She was great for us."
Henderson and Bell, the leading scorers for the Lions coming into Sunday's game, both added to their impressive totals. Henderson leads the Lions with 13 points (6G, 1A), while Bell comes in second with Bell close on her heels with 11 (4G, 3A).
A&M-Commerce keeper
Courtnie Northern saw her fair of action, making five saves en route to her third shutout of the season. One save in particular was spectacular, as she made a head's up point blank save on top Tigers scorer
Haley Hatcher.
With Sunday's win, the Lions continue their streak of dominance against Ouachita Baptist, having now won all 10 of the two school's all-time meetings. The Tigers' tough season has now gone from bad to worse, as they fall to 1-5-1.
The Lions come back to Commerce with four days to recuperate as they prepare for the start of Lone Star Conference play against Eastern New Mexico. That game is scheduled for Friday, September 26 at 7:00 p.m.
