WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS – The A&M-Commerce women's basketball team (4-5 overall; 0-1 in LSC) didn't get the start to the new year that they were hoping for, as they dropped below .500 for the first time this year after a 77-55 loss to the Midwestern State Mustangs (11-1 Overall; 2-0 in LSC).
By half, A&M-Commerce found themselves in an 18-point hole, trailing 45-27, but the Lions would make things interesting and rally from a 21-point second half deficit to bring the game to bring the game within seven, as the Mustangs' lead was cut to 57-50. But that's as close as Coach Burton's squad would come, as the Mustangs regained their rhythm to make up the ground they had in the final minutes.
The first five minutes of action went well for the Lions, as they compiled a 11-6 lead by way of five separate scorers at the 15:30 mark. Yet that was the biggest lead the Lions would ever have in the contest. MSU erased the deficit just over thirty seconds later, and the Lions would never take the lead again.
Gabby Scott was the lone-Lion to hit double-digit scoring on the afternoon with 10 points on 4 of 7 shooting. Freshman guard
Princess Davis had career-night by logging a career high eight assists to go with her six points.
Four Mustangs hit double figures in the win. Dianna Jones led all scorers with 16 points to go with five assists two steals, while Shambreka Jones logged 11 points, eight boards, two steals and a whopping four blocks. As a team, the big difference for MSU came at the free throw line, with the Mustangs dominating the Lions 90.5 percent to 25 percent (19 of 21 for MSU compared to 2 of 8 for A&M-Commerce).
The Lions will now return to Commerce with a day to prepare for the Arlington Baptist Patriots (6-3) of the Association of Christian College Athletics (ACCA). That game is scheduled for Monday, January 5 at 5:30 p.m. Tickets for the double-header are $8 for general admission and $5 for children between 4 and 12. For kids three and under, as well as for students with a valid school ID, admission is free of charge.
