COMMERCE, TEXAS – A&M-Commerce women's basketball (11-7; 5-3 in LSC) flourished thanks to a career-night from junior guard
Gabby Scott to beat the Tarleton State TexAnns (11-6; 4-4 in LSC) 84-77, moving into sole possession of fourth place in the Lone Star Conference in doing so.
The Lions scored their second highest point-total of the season with 84, and had five players score in double-digits. Scott hit personal bests in both points (22) and three-pointers (6), leading all scorers in an impressive outing. The junior shot efficiently on the night, going 6 of 10 from deep and 7 of 11 from the field. She has now put up double-digits in her past five consecutive games, hitting career-highs in points in three of them.
With the win, the Lions secured revenge on the team that eliminated A&M-Commerce in the 2013-14 LSC Tournament. Yet first year head coach
Jason Burton remains focused on the present.
"We weren't thinking about last year's game. As far as we're concerned, it's all about winning the next game on the schedule," said Burton, " As far as moving into fourth, we can't get caught up in that. It changes constantly. All that matters is getting better every game, and making next game the most important game on the schedule."
Senior guard
Ashlee Johnson returned to prominence on the back of a multifaceted outing, flirting with a triple double by putting up 11 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, while also pawing away four steals. Freshman forward
Artaejah Gay achieved the first double-double of her collegiate career with an 11 point, 10 rebound night with a block and a steal as well.
Rounding out the top-scorers for the Lions were junior center
Kiana Evans and sophomore
Natalie Hessong. Evans started the game with 5 for 5 shooting, ending up with 12 points and six rebounds. Hessong meanwhile scored 11 points by virtue of three treys on the night.
La'Tisha Hearne also submitted a yeoman's effort with eight points on seven boards.
The Lions managed to significantly limit the TexAnns' top-offensive threats Kathy Thomas and Ikpeaku Iwobi. Thomas was held to a 2 of 12 shootig night, which included going 0 of 8 from deep, finishing with eight points and six assists. Iwobi went into early foul trouble before eventually fouling out in the closing minutes, finishing with nine points and eight rebounds.
As a team, the two major keys to the Lions' victory were their superior shooting night and their doubling up of the TexAnns in the assists department, out-diming TSU 22 to 11. With the loss, Tarleton State falls to sixth place in the conference. They'll have the rare distinction of participating in a back-to-back which involves them traveling back to Stephenville for a game tomorrow against the visiting Texas Woman's Pioneers.
The Lions on the other hand have now won seven of their last nine, and will look to keep the momentum going as they return to the road. They'll travel to Lawton, Oklahoma for a showdown with the third place Cameron Aggies (9-8; 6-2 in LSC) in the Aggie Gym. A win would propel A&M-Commerce into a third-place tie.
