Lawton, Okla. –
Christian Macauley poured in a game-high 20 points for the second straight game to right the A&M-Commerce ship in 76-71 road win over Cameron in a Lone Star Conference game Wednesday night in Aggie Gym.
After holding Cameron to 22 first half points -- the lowest points scored by an opponent in a half all season -- and a 25 percent shooting percentage on only seven made baskets on 28 attempts, the Lions led by 11, 33-22, at the break. A&M-Commerce was an efficient 13-for-30 from the floor in the stanza.
Cameron came roaring out of the intermission with an 18-8 run to cut the Lion lead all the way down to point, 41-40, six minutes into play on a 3-pointer by Cameron Lee. The Lions held a narrow advantage over the next two minutes before Cameron flipped a 47-46 deficit into a four-point lead, 53-49, on three free throws from Zac Tabor with 9:50 left to play.
The Lions answered with a triple from
De'Andre Carson and a jumper for
Darrell Williams both assisted from
JR Owens to regain a 54-53 lead with 8:55 remaining. The two teams traded baskets for the next two minutes until Williams converted a layup to give the Lions a 58-57 lead. After Cameron cut the lead down to 65-64 on a Lee triple Macauley came charging through the lane on a missed shot and finished with a high-flying jam on the offensive rebound. The dunk brought life to the Lion bench for the first time in the half and gave the Lions a three-point lead, 67-64, with four minutes remaining.
Eddie Leal hit a pair of jumpers in the final minutes and
LaDon Carnegie, Carson and Macauley each converted a free throw as the Lions held on for the 76-71 lead. Macauley's final free throw gave the big man his second 20-point game in as many contest as he finished with 20 points; he has scored in double-digits in four straight games for the Lions the longest active streak for a Lion in double figures. He also hauled in 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season and the Lions 19th on the year.
A&M-Commerce finished 48 percent from the floor, 33 percent from behind the 3-point arc and 71 percent from the free throw line after going 15-of-21 from the charity stripe. Cameron raised its shooting percentage to 37 percent overall, but struggled from behind the arc after making only 6-of-21 attempts for 29 percent. The Aggies were an efficient 79 percent from the free throw line going 27-of-34 from the free throw line including a 21-of-26 clip in the second half.
Carnegie followed Macauley's lead with 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting form the floor, while
Anthony Adams chipped in 10 points and fives assists.
Four Aggies scored in double figures led by Desmond Henry with 14 points after going a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Jamaal Brantley and Lee added in 13 points each, while KeDorian Sullivan notched 11 points in the loss.
The win lifts the Lions to their third straight victory over the Aggies and the first in Lawton since 2009-10 season. A&M-Commerce also halts its two-game skid and improved to 16-5 overall and 5-3 in the LSC, while Cameron drops its sixth game in seven tries. The Aggies fall to .500 overall on the season at 10-10 and 2-6 in conference action.
The Lions return to friendly confines of the historic Field House Saturday, February 7 against Midwestern with tipoff set for 6 p.m. A&M-Commerce looks to avenge a 61-57 road loss to the Mustangs back on January 3 – the first meeting between the two schools during the 2014-15 season.
