No. 3 seed Tarleton State Tops No. 6 seed A&M-Commerce in Walk-off Fashion

The loss ends the Lions 2015 inaugural season in the first round of the LSC Championship

Canyon, Texas – After Aundria Zunigia-Romero knotted the game at one with a solo home run in the top of the seventh, No. 3 seed Tarleton State ended No. 6 seed A&M-Commerce's season with a walk-off sacrifice fly double play in the bottom of the seventh in the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament Friday morning.

Zunignia-Romero deposited a 1-1 pinch over the fence in left to knot the game at one in the top of the seventh with the Lions down to their last three outs.  Tarleton State's first run came in the bottom of the second inning on a Nyka Wood solo homer to left.

Following Zunigia-Romero's home run the two teams went all square at one into the bottom of the seventh. The TexAnns led off the inning with a walk and capitalized on a Lion throwing error to move the runners to second and third with no outs.  After an intentional walk, to load the bases, Tarleton State's Alyssa Ringhausen hit a bloop fly ball to centerfield. With the Lions infield and outfield playing swallow in an attempt to get the force out at home, Baylea Higgs made a diving catch on the fly ball and threw to second to force the runner out at second who did not tag up. Higgs had no chance to throw home to cut down the winning run on the play with the Lions only hope left to appeal to see if the runner from third left early for a triple play.  Instead, the Lions season ended on a sacrifice fly double play scoring the game-winning unearned run.

The 2-1 loss was the 20th one-run game of the season for the Lions.  In those 20 games, the Lions went 8-12.  A&M-Commerce went 13-5 in games when its opponent scored two runs or less despite coming out on the short end in Friday's game.

The Lions, who were 18-4 coming into Friday when out-hitting their opponents, tallied six hits compared the only three hits for the TexAnns. Two of Tarleton State's three hits never left the infield.

Courtney Moore was saddled with the loss for the Lions despite her near perfect performance in the circle.  Moore came on in relief of Zunigia-Romero, who went two innings and allowed the one TexAnn run on the solo homer, in the third inning with a runner on bases after and infield single. The hit would be the last credited hit for Tarleton State as Moore went four and two-thirds innings of hitless softball. She struck out three batters.

Ponce was the lone Lion with multiple hits in the game. She went 2-for-3 at the plate for her 15th multi-hit game of the season.  Higgs had one hit in three trips to the plate to extend her hitting streak to eight games, matching the second longest streak for a Lion in 2015.

A&M-Commerce ended its 2015 inaugural season at 29-24 just one win shy of the 30-win measuring stick.
