Late goals push No. 24 A&M-Commerce to 2-0 win over Texas Woman's

COMMERCE – The No. 24 Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team scored two late goals to earn a 2-0 win over Texas Woman's at the Lion Soccer Field on Wednesday night.

The Lions have now won four consecutive matches and avenge an earlier road loss to the Pioneers. A&M-Commerce is now 9-3-0 overall and 6-1-0 in the Lone Star Conference with 18 points. TWU falls to 6-6-1 overall and 2-5-0 in LSC play.

A&M-Commerce hosts Midwestern State at 7 p.m. Friday.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Lions' goals came from the LSC Players of the Week, which were announced earlier in the day – Vicky Back and Savannah Grasser.
- A&M-Commerce outshot TWU 13-9.
- Goalkeeper Caitlin Duty made four saves to pick up her sixth shutout of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In a wide open match that went from end to end, the Lions had the most opportunities, but couldn't capitalize until late in the match. A&M-Commerce had three shots saved in the opening 45 minutes and took five corner kicks to the Pioneers' two.

Duty made a pair of saves in the first 20 minutes of the second half but the back line did a solid job of keeping challenging Pioneer shots at bay. A shot by Back in the 73rd minute narrowly missed wide right to energize the Lions.

Back scored the game-winner in the 85th minute, heading in a long angled cross from the right side by Grasser.

After a slew of Pioneer substitutions in an effort to throw numbers forward, Grasser scored her ninth goal of the season and 41st of her career in the 88th minute, poking in a low cross by Jessika Coronado on the counterattack.

Even at that late stage, the drama of the match was not complete, as TWU earned a penalty kick with 1:32 to play, but Chelsea Martin hit the shot high over the bar. The Lions would run out the clock on their fifth home win of the year from there.
