Lions Sweep the First Day of Emerald Beach Hotel Softball Invitational

Kingsville, Texas – A&M-Commerce took the first game 13-3 against Southwestern Oklahoma State run ruling the Bulldogs marking the first run rule game of the season. The Lions followed up with a 9-3 win against St. Edward's for the second time this season in game two of the Emerald Beach Hotel Softball Invititional.
 
"I am proud of the way our team played today, it was a great team effort! Selena (Rima) was big in the circle, she had great relief performances to pick up two wins," head coach Richie Bruister said.
 
Game 1: A&M-Commerce 13, Southwestern Oklahoma State 3
Turning Point
- The Lions pounded out six runs and took advantage of four Bulldog errors to score nine runs in the top of the third inning to take a 10-1 lead.
 
Inside the box score
-Katie Dean pitched the first two innings and had three strikeouts.
 
-Rima came in for Dean in the top of the third and pitched four innings. She allowed two hits, had six strikeouts and got the win.
 
-Baylea Higgs went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, two hits and one RBI.
 
Summary
1st Inning
-Higgs walked. Luci Ponce grounded out to first base gaining 1 RBI when Higgs came through home knotting up the score with the Bulldogs 1-1.
 
3rd Inning
- The Lions scored nine unearned runs racking up a 10-1 lead. At the end of inning there were nine runs, six hits and four errors. Cherie Jackson and Monica Cherry each had two-run singles in the inning.
 
6th Inning
- Danielle Guerra, Kylene Hatton and Haley Colwell scored in the bottom of the sixth. The Bulldogs went three-up-three-down to end the game. The Lions run ruled. Hatton and Colwell scored on a Ciera Nunez two-run single pushing the Lions over the run-rule limit.
 
Game 2: A&M-Commerce, 9, St. Edward's, 3
Turning Point
- The Lions turned a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead thanks to three hits and a pair of Hilltopper errors.
 
Inside the box score
- Selena Rima had the hot hand with five strikeouts in 3.2 innings earning her second win of the day in relief.
 
- Luci Ponce went 2-for-3 and had three RBI.
 
- Ciera Nunez went 2-for-3 with two hits and one RBI.
 
2nd Inning
- With the Lions trailing 2-0, Cherry scored the first run of the game after reaching on a fielder's choice. She scored following a Hilltopper error that kept the inning alive.
 
3rd Inning
- Higgs came around to score after reaching on a single to knot the game at two.
 
4th Inning
- After St. Edward's took a 3-2 lead, Cherry, who reached on a single, scored on a throwing error. After reaching on a single, Nunez came around to score when Higgs reached on an error. Ponce singled to second and recorded when Higgs came around to score, unearned to give the Lions a 5-3 lead.
 
5th Inning
-Ponce doubled down the line with the bases loaded scoring two runs to highlight a four-run inning for the Lions to complete the scoring in the game.
 
What's Next
The Lions will play a pair of games Saturday against Texas A&M International Saturday at 1 p.m. and against Black Hills State at 6 p.m. before playing the fifth and final game of the tournament against St. Edward's Sunday at 1 p.m.
