The Lions Fall In Canyon, Texas 63-58

Canyon, Texas— The Lions dropped another close game against nationally ranked West Texas A&M 63-58.

1st Half
West Texas A&M had a quick 7-0 start, while A&M-Commerce shot 0-of-3 and had two turnovers. However, once settling in, the Lions went on their own 7-0 run and shot a 4-of-4 clip to cut the lead to one at 12-11. Micheaela Neuhaus hit a corner three for the Lady Buffs and ended the quarter with a 15-11 lead.
 
After a three-pointer by Alie Decker, the Lady Buffs go 0-of-6 from the floor and went over four minutes without scoring a basket. The Lions capitalized on their scoring drought with a 6-0 run cutting a seven-point lead down to three at 18-15. A layup by Artaejah Gay gave the Lions their first lead of the game at 21-20. The Lions led by as much as three points in the second quarter, but both teams went into the half tied at 25.
 
The Lions shot 50 percent from the floor on 10-of-20 shooting and shot a 5-of-6 clip from the charity stripe. The Lady Buffs struggled offensively shooting 9-of-28 from the field. However, their five three-pointers kept them afloat in the half. Princess Davis and Artaejah Gay led the Lions with six points each. Michaela Neuhaus had eight points for the Lady Buffs and Alie Decker added seven. Combined, Neuhaus and Decker had three made three-pointers in the first half. 
 
2nd Half
The Lions dominated the paint in the third quarter, getting six points from Artaejah Gay and four points from Brittany Adams. The Lions ended the quarter shooting 5-of-7 from the floor yet ended the quarter down by one, 42-41.
 
Gabby Scott hits a three-pointer to start the forth quarter, putting the Lions up 44-42. After that basket, the Lions shot 1-of-6 from the floor as the Lady Buffs goes on a run highlighted by two three-pointers to take back a 52-46 lead. Later in the quarter, Scott strikes again with a triple to cut the lead down to three, 59-56 with 1:33 left to play. Shomari Harris gets fouled on the next possession and knocks down two free throws to trim the lead the Lady Buffs lead to one point. After a turnover by the Lions to potentially win the game, Sasha Watson gets to the free throw line to put the Lady Buffs back up by three points. Scott tried to work her magic with another three-pointer to tie, but Madison McLain blocked it, recovered the rebound, and knocked down two free throws on the other end as WT went on to win 63-58.
 
Princess Davis tied with Madison McLain with 13 points. For the Lions, Artaejah Gay and Gabby Scott had 12, and ten points respectively. Zantaya Davis finished with 12 points for West Texas A&M and Alie Decker ended the game with ten points.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Lions are back at .500 in the Lone Star Conference.
  • A&M-Commerce shot 43% from the floor (22-of-51) and 85.7% from the free throw line (12-of-14). The back-breaker was their 16.7 (2-of-12) percent from beyond the arc.

"Our girls played well and the game came down to the last few possessions. We cleaned up in the second half as far as taking care of the ball in the second half. We have two more games at home that we need to take care of and then hope to see WT again this season."
